We believe everyday life can be better.
Not dramatically, and not all at once. In the ordinary decisions people make every day about where to go, what to support, who to trust and what to do with the things they no longer need.
There is no shortage of information. What is scarce is judgment, provenance, taste, local knowledge and a willingness to say that some things deserve attention more than others.
So we build publications rather than content sites. A publication has a point of view, editorial standards, relationships with its subjects, and something worth returning to. It is prepared to make distinctions.
We think publishing can change what succeeds. When quality, craft, service and contribution to a neighbourhood become visible, businesses have a reason to invest in them. We do not only want to find better businesses. We want the work to help create them.
Technology gives us leverage. Human judgment gives us value. We use software to research at scale, keep information current and work across languages, and none of that decides what we recommend.
- 01. Better choices make better lives.
- 02. Better businesses make better neighbourhoods.
- 03. Local knowledge makes places better.
- 04. Trust matters more when strangers meet.
- 05. The responsible choice should be the easy choice.
- 06. Good information can change what succeeds.
- 07. Technology should give small publishers bigger ambitions.
